Pirongia Clydesdales Flying the Flag for New Zealand Clydesdales

Pirongia Clydesdales Flying the Flag for New Zealand Clydesdales

I was extremely lucky to have the chance to visit the United States this year, and travel with my good friends at Express Clydesdales in Yukon, Oklahoma.

It just so happened that my trip coincided with the prestigious World Clydesdale Show, taking place in Madison, Wisconsin.

The show is a major event on the Express Clydesdales' calendar, and indeed a very important event for all American and Canadian Clydesdale breeders and enthusiasts. In fact, breeders from all corners of the world will travel to the United States to be at this show.

I travelled to the show with the Express team, and helped out during the duration of the week long event. This was indeed a fantastic learning curve for me, and a wonderful experience being part of such a successful show team. The Express Clydesdales took out the World Champion Six Horse Hitch title this year!

My week spent at the show could only be described as one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Not only did I meet some of the best Clydesdale breeders in the world, I was able to see some of the world's best horses and teams in action.

On the Thursday evening of the show, our Express crew attended the show’s charity auction and formal dinner. A good turnout of around 300 Clydesdale breeders and enthusiasts were present, making the evening a great success. Although I didn’t come across any other Kiwis, there were a number of international breeders present, including representatives from Australia.

The Show Director had asked me to present on behalf of New Zealand following the dinner, along with a small number of representatives from other parts of the world. It was indeed a great honour to be asked and I was delighted to deliver an overview of the breed in New Zealand, report on breeding progress and of course, use of the breed in today’s society.

I was pleased to be approached by a number of people following my speech with very positive comments and a flood of questions in regards to the breed in New Zealand.

The remainder of the week was spent preparing the Express horses for show classes and enjoying what the show had to offer. What a wonderful way to see the progress being made in international Clydesdale breeding circles, and of course broaden my own knowledge within the field.
